Le Pho, born in 1907 in Hanoi’s Nhan Chinh village, is renowned for his captivating paintings of nudes, gardens, and floral still lifes. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Hanoi under the mentorship of Victor François Tardieu before receiving a scholarship to continue his artistic journey at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1932. Le Pho’s works are highly sought after, with his three-panel painting Figures in a Garden achieving a remarkable sale of US$2.29 million in April 2022.

Mai Trung Thu (b. 1906), one of the first graduates of the École des Beaux-Arts de ‘Indochine in Hanoi, celebrates the innocence of rural Vietnam in his works. His participation in the 1937 International Decorative Arts Exhibition in Paris led him to settle in France, where he painted tender images of Vietnamese women, children, and idyllic landscapes. Thu’s silk paintings, known for their bold colors and vibrant scenes, offer a unique perspective on traditional clothing and utensils.

Le Thi Luu, born in 1911 in the picturesque village of Tho Khoi, Bac Ninh Province, began her artistic journey at the Indochina College of Fine Arts. Her silk paintings, as described by art critic Thuy Khue, create “a world of her own.” Luu’s works elegantly capture pre-war Vietnamese society, featuring naive toddlers, stunning mountain girls, and graceful ladies. Her masterpieces include Me Diu Con (Mother Carrying Baby on Her Back) and Ba Me Con Qua Phu (A Widow and Her Children).
