Tet, Vietnam’s Lunar New Year celebration, is a joyous and highly anticipated event in the country. While the official holiday spans four days, many choose to extend their festivities, creating a week-long celebration filled with tradition and cheer.
This upcoming Tet in 2025 will be celebrated on January 29, and the preparations are well underway in Duong Son.
Flowers, along with traditional foods like banh chung, banh tet, and li xi, hold a special place in the Tet celebrations. Popular choices include peach blossoms, kumquats, apricot blossoms, and chrysanthemums, each bringing their own symbolic meaning and beauty to the festivities.

The farmers of Duong Son are hard at work, cultivating a variety of flowers for the holiday. Marigolds, roses, gerbera daisies, mokara orchids, and petunias are among the most common sights in their gardens. However, it is the chrysanthemum morifolium that takes center stage during Tet, often bringing in the highest income for the growers.
Despite facing challenging weather conditions in September and early October, the local farmers have persevered, and their dedication has paid off with a bountiful season.

Ly Da, a flower garden owner in Duong Son, anticipates a fruitful season. “I plan to harvest around 10,000 chrysanthemum pots if the good weather continues,” Da shared. Chrysanthemums flourish in sunlight, so we nurture them outdoors, careful to protect them from heavy rain,” they added.
As the big day approaches, the gardeners of Duong Son are focused on tending to their crops with utmost care. They take preventive measures to safeguard their flowers from pests and adverse weather conditions, ensuring the highest quality for the Tet market.

Dozens of workers can be seen daily, fertilizing, watering, and pruning the flowers with precision. As the flowers enter their critical growth phase, the gardens are lit up at night to provide warmth and promote healthy development.
This year, chrysanthemums are expected to sell for VND5,000-6,000 (US$0.2) per plant, while larger pots of chrysanthemum morifolium can command several hundred thousand dong, depending on their size.
