Arne Slot has been at the helm of the Dutch team since 2021, leading them to victory in the 2022-23 Eredivisie league and the KNVB Cup this season. Alongside these triumphs, Feyenoord also reached the Europa Conference League final in his inaugural season, marking a successful first step for Slot at the club.
Stepping down from Feyenoord was not an easy decision for Slot, as he expressed in a statement on the club’s website. He acknowledged the many great moments and the opportunity to work with incredible people during his tenure. However, the chance to become a head coach in the Premier League for one of the world’s biggest clubs proved too enticing for the sportsman.
Jurgen Klopp’s announcement in January regarding his departure from Liverpool at the end of the season left a significant void to fill. After much speculation, Slot confirmed on Friday that he would be taking on the role of Liverpool manager, subject to a work permit.
Liverpool Football Club officially announced Arne Slot as their new head coach, starting June 1, 2024. This announcement came after Liverpool’s final game of the season, a 2-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers, where Klopp led the Anfield crowd in a song for the incoming manager.
Slot’s aggressive and attacking style caught the eye of Liverpool, who were eager to bring his talents to the Premier League. His previous link with the Tottenham Hotspur job and contract extension at Feyenoord showcased his desirability. Liverpool finished third in the Premier League this season, nine points behind champions Manchester City, while Feyenoord came in second place to PSV Eindhoven in the Eredivisie.

A Fond Farewell from Fans
Feyenoord fans gave Slot a heartfelt send-off after their final league game of the season, a 4-0 win over Excelsior. Slot’s three-year spell at the club came to an end, and he expressed his gratitude for the support he received during his time there.
“I had a wonderful three years at Feyenoord and felt a deep sense of belonging from the very beginning, both within the club and with the fans,” Slot reminisced. He added that he always believed in the potential for success at Feyenoord, and their achievements during his tenure, including reaching a European final and winning multiple prizes, filled him with pride.
This season, Feyenoord came close to reclaiming the league title but fell short due to an impressive PSV side. Despite this, Slot’s success and entertaining football style had already caught the attention of English clubs, including Crystal Palace and Leeds United. Spurs also made an attempt to recruit him last season, but he chose to stay loyal to Feyenoord.
However, the offer from Liverpool proved too difficult to refuse, and now Slot faces the challenging task of succeeding the beloved Klopp. Feyenoord general manager Dennis te Kloese acknowledged Slot’s impact on the club, stating, “Arne has undeniably left his mark on Feyenoord, and Liverpool will gain an extraordinary professional.”
