According to Cultura Fish (Hieu Van Ngu), Hat Boi is part of the “Alternative Identities: Masks of ASEAN and Korea” exhibition, which aims to introduce different faces created under the theme of “Mask”, a cultural heritage of humanity.

The event is jointly organized by KF ASEAN Culture House and the International Information and Networking Centre for Intangible Cultural Heritage in the Asia-Pacific Region under the auspices of UNESCO (ICHCAP). It consists of five sections, and Hat Boi is introduced in Section 3.

Google Arts & Culture describes Hat Boi or Tuong as a traditional Vietnamese classical drama that encourages Vietnamese people to contemplate their past and present lives. This form of mask drama combines music and dance, featuring distinctive makeup and costumes.

Hat Boi dramatizes Vietnamese folk tales and fables, as well as historical, political, social, and cultural scripts. It portrays various figures, including kings, queens, generals, maids, ladies, and students. The performances also convey lessons on heroic deeds and sacrifices for a greater cause.

The colors and patterns used on the faces of the characters in Hat Boi have symbolic meanings. For instance, a white face represents gentleness and quietness, while red symbolizes wisdom, courage, and staunchness. A striped face denotes an ugly person with a hot temper.
