Hanoi’s Gia, Tam Vi, and Hibana by Koki were awarded one star at an awards ceremony in the Vietnamese capital city on Tuesday. Along with Anan Saigon in Ho Chi Minh City, they were the only restaurants to receive a one-star rating. Michelin’s rating system defines one Michelin Star as ‘high quality cooking, worth a stop.’

In addition to the one-star recipients, Anna Saigon is the only restaurant in Vietnam featured among the 50 best eateries in Asia, according to food and beverage specialist 50 Best. Michelin Star restaurants are recognized in The Michelin Guide, a guidebook published annually that reviews exceptional restaurants worldwide.

Alongside the one-star awards, 99 other restaurants in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City were honored with Michelin Selected and Bib Gourmand Awards. The Michelin Selected list includes 32 restaurants in Hanoi and 38 in Ho Chi Minh City, while the Bib Gourmand group comprises 29 eateries, 13 in Hanoi and 16 in Ho Chi Minh City.

Furthermore, Michelin presented three Special Awards: the Young Chef Award given to chef Sam Tran of Gia Restaurant, the Sommelier Award to Yu Yamamoto of Lua Restaurant, and the Service Award to chef Nguyen Thi Nu of Vietnam House Restaurant.

Gwendal Poullennec, international director of the Michelin Guide, expressed pride in presenting the first restaurant selection in Vietnam and highlighted the differences and variety of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City’s culinary scenes. Poullennec also stated that the recognitions were just the beginning of Michelin’s journey in Vietnam and that they would continue to discover more gastronomic spots in both cities in the future.

According to the Michelin Guide website, there are currently over 3,000 Michelin-starred restaurants in almost 40 countries worldwide.
