Vietnam managed to preserve their top spot in the group-stage and have booked a spot in the semifinals of women’s football at the ongoing 2023 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Cambodia, despite suffering a 1-2 loss to the Philippines in their final Group A match on Tuesday afternoon.
Vietnam’s opponents in the semifinals will be the hosts, Cambodia.
The penalty was converted by Alyjah Dula, who put the Philippines up 1-0.
The Philippines took an early lead in Tuesday’s game, thanks to a penalty awarded in the 11th minute after Vietnamese goalkeeper Tran Thi Kim Thanh fouled a Philippine striker in the box. The penalty was expertly converted by Alyjah Dula, giving the Philippines a 1-0 lead.
Vietnam toiled to craft scoring chances before finally finding an equalizer in the 41st minute. Goalkeeper Olivia McDaniel, unable to hold on to a cross from defender Nguyen Thi My Anh, saw her miscue punished as Nguyen Thi Bich Thuy tucked away the rebound.
The equal first-half score appeared to alleviate the tension on the Vietnamese players in the second half, when they displayed a powerful style of play and created numerous threatening opportunities.
However, despite their best efforts, they were unable to convert their scoring opportunities and ended up conceding an own goal in the 83rd minute. Midfielder Sara Eggesvik’s cross into Vietnam’s box was pressured by Hali Long, causing Tran Thi Thu to head the ball into Kim Thanh’s net.
