The Hanoi Times — Hanoi authorities have unveiled plans to dismantle the beloved ‘Shark Jaw’ building adjacent to the Hoan Kiem Lake, as part of an ambitious urban renewal project. The project aims to restore the original landscape of Dong Kinh Nghia Thuc Square, enhancing public spaces and recreational areas for the city’s residents.

The ‘Shark Jaw’ building, a distinctive feature of Hanoi’s skyline since its completion in 1993, will be replaced by a spacious 12,000-square-meter public square. The new development will seamlessly blend with the surrounding environment and include three underground levels. The first level will be a hub for cultural and commercial activities, while the second and third levels will provide convenient parking spaces.
With an anticipated completion date of April 30 for the demolition and September 2 for the above-ground plaza, the project is well underway. The transformation of this area holds historical significance, as it was once a coconut plantation known as “Coconut Garden.”
During the French colonial era, the landscape changed dramatically, and it was renamed Place Négrier, becoming a site associated with the execution of Vietnamese patriots by the French. However, a pivotal moment in Vietnam’s educational history occurred in 1907 with the establishment of the Dong Kinh Nghia Thuc School by prominent patriotic scholars.

The iconic “Shark Jaw” building, a symbol of Hanoi’s architectural heritage, will soon complete its historic mission, making way for a revitalized public space.
The school introduced the Latin alphabet, replacing the Sinographic script, and offered free education, igniting a new sense of patriotism. In recognition of the school’s impact, the square was renamed Dong Kinh Nghia Thuc after the August Revolution in 1945.
Over the years, the area surrounding Hoan Kiem Lake has served as an important transfer point, with a tram line connecting central Hanoi to suburbs. The tram station was eventually replaced by the Bo Ho Department Store in the 1980s, which became a shopping hub for locals. Now, with the upcoming demolition of the ‘Shark Jaw’ building, Hanoi residents eagerly anticipate a revitalized square that will offer expanded public spaces and enhanced cultural significance.

Phan Hong Minh, a resident of Hanoi’s Dong Da District, shared her enthusiastic support for the demolition during a recent visit to Hoan Kiem Lake. “I’m excited about the decision to tear down the ‘Shark Jaw’ building,” she said. “It will open up the space around the lake and accentuate its beauty.”
