The Vietnamese duo had the upper hand going into the match.
A stalemate was all it took for Chien and Vinh to progress, and their task was made easier by Sweden’s absence of veteran, Michael Nilsson, who was undergoing rehabilitation. His substitute, Nalle Olsson, failed to live up to expectations.
Vinh seized the opportunity, dominating Olsson with a score of 40-19, guaranteeing Vietnam at least a draw and securing their progression.
The game between Chien and Swedish great, Torbjorn Blomdahl, was a closely fought contest. Chien held a substantial lead at one stage, pulling ahead to 19-9. However, Blomdahl displayed his class, rallying to take the lead at 24-20.
The final series went down to the wire, with Blomdahl missing crucial chances to seal the game. In the end, the Swedish master emerged victorious with a score of 40-34.
Vietnam concluded the group phase with one victory and two draws, securing second place and a berth in the quarterfinals. Belgium, with two wins and one draw, topped the group.
Chien and Vinh will aim to replicate their 2024 triumph, when they clinched Vietnam’s inaugural World Championship 3-Cushion National Teams title.
The quarterfinal action gets underway at 5:00 pm on Saturday, Vietnam time.
