According to the event organizers and local authorities, the runner, a Vietnamese citizen, was near the finish line of the 50km race at the VUM 2024 on Saturday when he suddenly exhibited signs of poor health.

“This athlete covered a substantial distance through difficult and mountainous terrain,” a local official stated.

“Regrettably, he collapsed along the route.”

“Despite receiving urgent medical attention, he did not survive.”

The runner passed away the following morning at Hoa Binh General Hospital.

The official added that before the race day, the organizers required all participants to declare their health status and sign a health commitment statement.

The VUM 2024 took place in Chieng Chau Commune, Mai Chau District, Hoa Binh Province for one day on Saturday.

The event drew over 2,200 participants from 38 countries to compete in trail running events ranging from a strenuous 70km course to a more manageable 5km distance.
