Canadian Evan Dunfee broke the men’s 35km race walk world record on Sunday, clocking a time of 2:25:02 to shave off seven seconds from the previous record.
The 34-year-old dominated the race, leading from start to finish and crossing the line three minutes ahead of his closest competitor, Germany’s Christopher Linke.
Dunfee, an accomplished race walker, had previously won bronze medals in the 50km event at the 2019 World Championships and the 2020 Olympic Games.
The 35km race walk discipline was officially recognized in 2022, and Kawano’s time from last October was the first to meet the world record requirements. However, Dunfee’s impressive performance has now set a new benchmark.
