Located about 10 km north of Tuy Hoa city, the cluster of Chua islands in An Phu commune (Tuy Hoa city, Phu Yen province) looks like a “giant bird” in the middle of the vast sky and sea of Phu Yen.

Chua island has a size of 0.22 km2, located near the shore, formed from volcanic eruptions millions of years ago. According to local fishermen, there used to be a pagoda on the top of the island, the hermitage of a concubine of Lord Nguyen Anh. Therefore, this island is called Hon Chua, which means Pagoda in Vietnamese, and is popular to this day.

The stacked stone blocks form a wall to block the natural waves for Chua island. According to Professor Guy Martini (General Secretary of the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network), the geological heritage in Phu Yen is very rich and diverse.
Volcanic sediments stretching around the island create an ideal space for many aquatic species such as shrimp, fish, squid, and crab to gather here. “This locality has a series of outstanding landscapes including Da Dia rapids, Yen island, Chua island, Nua island, Mon beach – Dien cape. Phu Yen province has all the values of geological and natural heritage, cultural, intangible to develop into a Global Geopark,” said Guy Martini.

Phan Y Thien Duyen (a tourist from Hanoi) shared that she was especially impressed when she first came to Phu Yen with her family to travel and explore many unspoiled islands near the shore.
“When I came to visit Chua island, one of the islands near the shore of Phu Yen, I really liked the unspoiled sky and sea space here. The fine white sand stretches with the cool blue sea creating wonderful scenery, great for check-in to remember this wonderful land”, she added.
Every year, Chua Island attracts a large number of tourists. Nguyen Thi Hong Thai (Acting Director of Phu Yen Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism) said: “Visitors can go to Long Thuy beach – Chua island to experience scuba diving, fishing, windsurfing, and kayaking”.
The white sand beach stretching hundreds of meters around the island is a suitable place for visitors to experience swimming or camping overnight on the island.

Besides the natural beauty of the island, fishermen living at Chua island also arrange heart-shaped rocks, both aquaculture and break waves to anchor ships and boats as well as create landscapes to attract tourists.
Visitors can camp overnight, fish, squid and organize team-building games, and enjoy many fresh specialties such as grilled skullcap urchin with chicken eggs, cuttlefish soup, and various kinds of prickly pear, cone snail, and nacre at Chua island.
