Football Fever: Overcoming Visual Impairment with Passion and Skill

Football is a game for all, and the students of Nguyen Dinh Chieu Secondary School in Hanoi are a testament to that. Despite their visual impairment, these young footballers are passionate about the beautiful game and let nothing stand in their way.

It all started in 1997 with an idea from Nhi Dong Newspaper Editor-in-Chief Vu Quang Vinh, who wanted to create a sporting playground for blind children. And so, a football tournament for the visually impaired was born, taking place every two years since. The Nguyen Dinh Chieu Secondary School football team is made up of 10 players, ranging from severe low vision to total blindness. But that doesn’t stop them from dribbling, running, and kicking the ball like the pros.

These talented footballers don’t just play at their school; they also compete with other blind football teams across Vietnam. The national football tournament for blind children sees Nguyen Dinh Chieu go up against teams from Thai Nguyen, Da Nang, and Hai Phong. It’s an exciting event that showcases the skills and determination of these young athletes.
