The 13th Annual Vietnamese Poetry Day: A Celebration of Literature and Culture

The 13th annual Vietnamese Poetry Day, themed “Towards the Nation’s Seas and Islands,” was a resounding success, drawing over 150 poets from more than 40 countries and territories. This year’s event, chaired by Nguyen Huu Thinh of the Vietnam Writers’ Association, aimed to showcase the richness of Vietnamese literature and foster a global appreciation for its unique qualities, especially in light of the increasing presence of foreign literature in the country.

The celebration provided a unique platform for international poets to present their compositions, with a special focus on Vietnam. Poet Neeva Mukova of Slovakia, for instance, captivated the audience by reciting a poem by Ho Xuan Huong in Vietnamese. Poets Indra Wossou from South Africa and Graham Mort from England also shared their latest works inspired by Vietnam. The event further reinforced the universal appeal of poetry and its ability to transcend cultural boundaries.

One of the highlights of the day was the poem-releasing ceremony, where the poets’ creations were attached to red balloons and released into the sky, symbolizing the freedom and creativity that poetry embodies. The event also featured an exhibition of international and Vietnamese literature, including works translated into foreign languages and published abroad. Visitors were treated to a diverse range of activities, including book displays, calligraphy demonstrations, and folk art performances, creating a vibrant celebration of literature and culture.
