Dam Boat Racing Festival: A Vibrant Celebration of Vietnam’s Naval Heritage

The Dam Boat Racing Festival, a spectacular event filled with excitement and tradition, takes place once every five years in Dam Village, Hanoi. This unique festival aims to recreate the brilliant military strategies of naval forces led by General Dao Truong during the reign of King Hung Due Vuong in the 3rd century BC.

Nguyen Mong Tuong, the head organizer, shared that this year’s festival featured three sailing teams with six boats in total. Each team consisted of valiant young men, aged 20 to 35, carefully selected from the hamlets of Thuong, Trung, and Ha. These teams proudly represented their communities, with each boat holding 25 determined individuals.

What sets the Dam Boat Racing Festival apart is the intense competition and the thrilling possibility of boat collisions. The boats raced fiercely, with their skilled rowers following the commands of their cheerleaders. The teams that managed to avoid capsizing after collisions were rewarded with prestigious prizes.

Beyond the excitement, the festival celebrates the unity, teamwork, and sporting spirit of the Vietnamese people, showcasing their rich cultural heritage and proud naval history.
