The country has earned a spot on Asian travelers’ bucket lists as a top destination to escape the heat, according to VOV, citing Japanese media outlet Nikkei Asia.

As global temperatures continue to rise due to factors such as climate change and global warming, many Asian travelers are opting for cooler locations instead of sunny beaches and tropical islands. They are exploring places like Scandinavia and the mountains of Vietnam, offering a refreshing change of pace.

Nikkei Asia highlights that many cost-conscious Asian travelers are particularly drawn to Sa Pa in northern Vietnam. This premier trekking destination boasts lush greenery and provides a unique opportunity to interact with local hill tribe minorities.

Supporting this trend, Google Trends data reveals a 100% global surge in searches for “cooler holidays” over the past 12 months up to May 8. Booking.com and the luxury travel network Virtuoso further reinforce this shift, with the former highlighting cooler climates as a key travel theme for 2024 and the latter noting that 82% of their customers are considering cooler destinations.

Coining the term “coolcations,” the travel industry is now promoting vacations that offer a respite from oppressive heat. Instead of flocking to traditional beach destinations like Thailand or Bali, many travelers are opting for Alaska, Norway, and Canada, seeking exotic experiences and activities like sledging, skiing, and whale watching.

Agoda, a digital travel platform, reports that Vietnam is the third fastest-growing destination in Asia for European travelers, based on accommodation searches. As Europe’s summer approaches, Agoda’s travel insights reveal that Asian destinations, including Vietnam, are not only popular choices but are also experiencing increased interest compared to the previous year, with a 52% surge in accommodation searches by Europeans for Asian getaways.

Agoda’s search data for April shows that Malaysia topped the list with an 89% increase in interest, followed by Japan, which saw a 71% jump. Vietnam came in third, with a significant 66% rise in interest from European travelers.

Lam Vu, Agoda’s Vietnam Country Director, commented on the growing popularity of Vietnam as a summer holiday destination among Europeans, as evidenced by the increase in searches compared to the previous year. “It’s exciting to see more and more Europeans discovering the diverse attractions that Vietnam has to offer during their vacations,” he said.

Ho Chi Minh City, Hoi An, and Nha Trang are the top three Vietnamese destinations that Europeans are most interested in. These locations offer a blend of leisure, adventure, and cultural experiences, making them ideal for travelers seeking a well-rounded summer holiday.

During the month of April, the European markets with the highest number of searches for travel to Vietnam were France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Spain.

According to the authority’s report, Vietnam welcomed nearly 7.6 million international arrivals in the first five months of this year, marking a 64.9% increase year-on-year and a 3.9% rise compared to the pre-COVID period. Simultaneously, the domestic tourism sector served 52.5 million travelers, with tourism earnings estimated at VND 352.2 trillion (USD 13.83 billion).

The Republic of Korea maintained its position as the largest source market for Vietnamese tourism during this period, with 1.9 million visitors, accounting for 25.7% of total foreign arrivals. China followed closely behind, contributing 21.2%.

The visa policy implemented on August 15 last year has significantly boosted tourist numbers, resulting in strong growth from Asian (73%) and European (57.1%) markets.
