This one-act opera by Italian composer Pietro Mascagni, Cavalleria Rusticana, has been captivating audiences since its first performance at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome on May 17, 1890. The story, which delves into the themes of love, jealousy, and betrayal, is both emotionally powerful and musically beautiful. Its timelessness has ensured that it remains a classic piece of opera to this day.
The opera is said to be a special mark of VNOB in the series of activities celebrating the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Italy and Vietnam. More than 120 musicians and actors of the VNOB will participate in the show, with the artist Thu Quynh as the soloist and four other soloists from other countries, especially the tenor voice of the famous opera artist Giovanni Maria Palmia, under the direction of the talented conductor Fan Ting and the stage director Cindy Leung from Hong Kong.
According to the performance organizer, opera was created primarily for special ceremonies or events when it first appeared in Italy in the 1600s. Early opera, deeply influenced by classical Greek opera, featured material centered around ancient Roman myths or royal figures to appeal to the upper class.

In the midst of this trend, Cavalleria Rusticana is a pioneering opera for the Verismo school, using the story of people from ordinary families as its main material. Its intimate and honest portrayal of the inner struggles of Turiddu, Lola, Santuzza, and Alfio was met with much acclaim from the public, catapulting its author, Pietro Mascagni, to fame on its very first night.
At the Opera Cavalleria Rusticana in Hanoi, the renowned concertmaster and violinist, Fan Ting, will be conducting a performance featuring some of the most influential artists from both home and abroad. Particularly noteworthy is the tenor vocal from Italy, Giovanni Maria Palmia, who will be playing the male lead, Turiddu. Palmia has achieved much success in prestigious opera competitions, such as the Concorso Lirico Internazionale Crescendi, and will be delivering a performance of the highest standard.
From the awe-inspiring set design to the hauntingly beautiful music and the talented singers, the Vietnamese version of the opera is expected to create an unforgettable musical experience for both locals and international audiences.
