THE HANOI TIMES — The introduction of the Artispheno robot for brain, spine, and cardiovascular surgeries has been a game-changer for Thanh Nhan Hospital. With this advanced technology, the hospital has optimized surgical methods, achieving unparalleled precision while effectively avoiding complications.

Thanh Nhan Hospital is at the forefront of medical innovation in Hanoi, embracing high-tech techniques and striving for excellence on a global scale.

A testament to their pioneering spirit, the hospital is the first in Vietnam to utilize high-frequency waves to treat musculoskeletal pain and has since shared this technique with other medical institutions.

Dr. Nguyen Thi Le My, Deputy Director of Thanh Nhan Hospital, shared with Hanoimoi Newspaper that their focus on integrating information technology into management, as well as medical examination and treatment, has been pivotal in their success.

Saint Paul General Hospital, another exemplar of medical advancement in Hanoi, showcased the life-saving capabilities of digital subtraction angiography (DSA) when they successfully treated a 12-year-old stroke patient in early March.

DSA has proven to be a potent tool in the hands of the hospital’s doctors, who have used it to save countless lives of patients with dangerous cerebrovascular malformations, including cerebral aneurysms and arteriovenous fistulas. The hospital handles up to 95 cases of DSA intervention per month, a testament to its popularity and effectiveness.

“This is just one of the many advanced techniques we routinely perform at Saint Paul General Hospital,” said Dr. Nguyen Duc Long, Director of the hospital. “We have introduced numerous challenging and complex procedures, such as laparoscopic surgery for the complete removal of pancreatic-duodenal masses and laparoscopic liver resection for treating liver and bile duct cancers. We also offer world-class pediatric surgery techniques.”

Notably, the hospital is the first in Hanoi to initiate the practice of harvesting and transplanting organs from brain-dead donors, a milestone in medical progress.

According to Dr. Long, the hospital will continue to push boundaries this year by performing liver transplantation techniques and advancing radiology, interventional cardiology, and emergency care for coronary artery diseases, strokes, and trauma, all in line with international standards.

The Hanoi Heart Hospital, driven by their motto, “For a healthy heart,” has, for over two decades, been a beacon of hope for patients of all ages suffering from cardiovascular diseases. In 2024 alone, the hospital admitted approximately 650,000 patients, a 10% increase from the previous year. They performed about 2,325 heart surgeries and 12,702 cardiovascular interventions, with patients as young as one-day-old newborns and weighing as little as 900 grams.

Dr. Ha Anh Duc, Director of the Department of Medical Examination and Treatment Management under the Ministry of Health, emphasized the critical role of technology transfer and human resources training in combating cardiovascular disease, the leading cause of death globally. By doing so, patients can access high-quality medical services close to home, reducing the strain on tertiary hospitals.

Embracing a Smart Healthcare Future

Hanoi’s hospitals are undergoing a digital transformation, revolutionizing treatment, management, and the development of smart healthcare models.

Smart healthcare kiosks have proven invaluable, offering convenient registration for medical examinations and payments without the hassle of long queues. These kiosks use citizen ID cards and facial recognition technology, streamlining the process.

At Saint Paul General Hospital, smart kiosks have enhanced efficiency, enabling a single staff member to handle an average of 1,600 patients per day. The reception protocol, once a six-step process, has been condensed to just two steps, reducing the waiting time from 5-10 minutes to a mere 10 seconds. Hoe Nhai Hospital has also witnessed a significant improvement, cutting down the reception time for each patient from five minutes to just 30 seconds.

Additionally, electronic medical records with critical data on examinations and treatments are now shared among hospitals. Cashless payments have been introduced, and artificial intelligence (AI) is being leveraged to enhance the accuracy of injury and disease diagnosis.

As Nguyen Khuyen, Director of Van Dinh General Hospital, explained, “With electronic medical records, all we need to do is open the computer, and the patient’s entire medical history, including allergies and previous illnesses, is right there. This frees up manpower and makes examinations and treatments more efficient.”

Dr. Nguyen Dinh Hung, Deputy Director of the Hanoi Department of Health, reaffirmed the commitment to accelerating digital transformation in management, examination, and treatment. He emphasized that all citizens would have electronic health records and electronic health books in the future.
