Can Tho City Celebrates Indonesia Day

The two-day event aimed to introduce the diverse culture of the thousand islands country, contributing to strengthen the solidarity, friendship and knowledge between the people of Vietnam and Indonesia.

The Indonesia Day programme opened in the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho on December 17, to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the strategic partnership and the 68th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Indonesia.

The two-day event, co-organized by the Can Tho administration and Consulate General of Indonesia, consists of a number exchange activities in the fields of culture, trade, tourism, and food, attracting the participation of 17 Indonesian businesses and distributors.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Agustaviano Sofjan, consul general of Indonesia in Ho Chi Minh City, noted that the friendly ties between both nations has been lifted to a level of strategic partnership, and trade cooperation is major pillar of bilateral relations.

He recalled that two-way trade last year hit USD 11.5 billion, beating their already set target of grossing USD 10 billion in bilateral trade for the first time. The initial 10 months of this year saw their trade fetch USD 11.6 billion.

Recently he said the two sides held the fourth meeting of the Joint Committee for Bilateral Cooperation (JCBC) in July and they agreed to set a goal of raising two-way trade to USD 15 billion by 2028.

Sofjan also expressed belief that the event would open further co-operation opportunities for the two countries in the fields of trade, investment, tourism, and culture in the future.

Speaking at the opening of the event, Permanent Vice Chairman of Can Tho City People’s Committee Duong Tan Hien said, Can Tho City and the Indonesian Consulate General in HCM City have implemented many practical and effective exchanges and cooperation activities.

In 2022, the total import-export turnover of Can Tho City and Indonesia will reach about USD 6.7 million with a number of main products, including seafood, feathers, pharmaceuticals, veterinary drugs, and pharmaceutical materials.

The city hopes to continue to receive the attention and support of the Consulate General of Indonesia and Indonesian businesses to organize more activities in Can Tho City to further strengthen investment cooperation and investment activities, people-to-people exchanges, contributing to fostering good relations between the two countries.

The event took place on December 17 and 18, with 20 booths displaying products of Can Tho and Indonesian businesses. Within the framework of the event, the Indonesian Consul General in collaboration with the Trade Investment Promotion Center and Can Tho Exhibition Fair, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism held two seminars on investment cooperation, connecting trade with Indonesian partners and tourism promotion.

They also awarded prizes for the writing contest with the theme “Post-Covid-19: Working together to promote ASEAN recovery.” The contest was organized by the Indonesian Consulate General in collaboration with Can Tho University.

In two days, at the main stage of Luu Huu Phuoc Park, cultural and artistic performances introducing the unique heritages of the two countries have also be performed.

In the framework of Indonesia Day in Can Tho City, on the afternoon of December 17, in Can Tho City, the Indonesian Consulate General and the city People’s Committee held a seminar on investment cooperation, concluding trade links with Indonesian partners.
