This exhibition, a first of its kind dedicated to these three artistic pioneers, showcases a diverse range of artworks sourced from various lenders, including public and private collections, as well as the artists’ families, close friends, and art enthusiasts. It offers a unique opportunity to explore the stylistic evolution of Le Pho, Mai Trung Thu, and Vu Cao Dam, from their early days to the pinnacle of their careers.
Curated in close collaboration with the artists’ families, who generously opened their archives, the exhibition delves into the intrepid careers of three friends with a deep love for their homeland and France. Set against the backdrop of political changes and evolving relations between the two countries throughout the 20th century, their stories unfold. Vintage photographs, early drawings, and preparatory sketches accompany the display of works on silk, oil on canvas, lacquered canvases, and sculptures in plaster and bronze. The fusion of Western and Asian techniques and materials in their art is emblematic of their unique style, which has gained increasing recognition in the art market over the last three decades.

The exhibition catalog, designed as a series of reference works, illuminates the major stages of each artist’s life and career. It provides valuable insights into the development of their styles and preferred themes, which evolved amidst the colonial context, Vietnam’s national liberation process, and the successive wars from 1939 to 1975. The exhibition also coincides with the 100th anniversary of the Indochina College of Fine Arts, a pivotal institution in the fusion of Western art with Vietnamese traditions, fostering a unique artistic style synonymous with Indochina.
Art scholar and critic, Ngo Kim Khoi, highlights the enduring value of Indochinese painting through this exhibition. “It’s a rare opportunity,” he says, “with art enthusiasts from Vietnam and beyond flying to Paris specifically to immerse themselves in this extraordinary showcase.”
