Vietnamese boxer Le Huu Toan outfought his Thai opponent Kitidech Hirunsuk over 12 rounds, winning the WBA Asia Championship title in the minimum weight division on Sunday.
The title fight took place at Saigon Sports Club in District 7, Ho Chi Minh City.
This was the first time Le Huu Toan, 29, had competed for the minimum weight title after a series of three wins, including two knock-outs.
Toan has also been the defending Vietnamese boxing champion under 48 kilograms for two consecutive years although he only started boxing three years ago after a long time active as an athlete and coach in Vovinam, or Vietnamese kickboxing.

His opponent in Sunday’s final, Kitidech Hirunsuk, had had an impressive record of eight wins in his career, including five knock-outs.
Despite a height disadvantage, Toan defeated the Thai opponent to win the belt after three judges announced the scorecards of 115-113, 116-112, and 116-112 in favor of the Vietnamese boxer.
This is the third time Vietnamese boxing has had an Asian championship, following Tran Van Thao’s WBC super flyweight belt in 2017 and Truong Dinh Hoang’s WBA super middleweight belt in 2020.
