Minister of Industry and Trade, Nguyen Hong Dien, met with US Secretary of Energy, Chris Wright, in Washington D.C. on March 13 for talks on bilateral economic and trade relations, with a focus on enhancing comprehensive energy cooperation.

During the meeting, Minister Dien emphasized Vietnam’s commitment to a sustainable and effective comprehensive strategic partnership with the US, highlighting the complementary nature of their economies and trade structures. He noted the steady growth of bilateral trade over the years, benefiting both nations.

Dien conveyed Vietnam’s policy of fostering a balanced, sustainable, and mutually beneficial economic relationship with the US, with no intention of creating barriers that could impact American workers or economic and national security.

Given Vietnam’s ambitious energy goals, including tripling power capacity by 2030 and achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, Dien expressed a strong desire for enhanced collaboration with US investors in the energy sector. He highlighted the potential for increased imports of US machinery, equipment, and raw materials to contribute to a more balanced and sustainable trade relationship.

Secretary Wright affirmed the interest of US energy firms in the Vietnamese market and proposed facilitating major US energy projects. He encouraged Vietnam to implement policies supporting diversified energy sources, increasing imports from the US.

Both ministers agreed to assign technical teams to explore an energy cooperation agreement and reviewed specific power projects in Vietnam, discussing strategies for expedited implementation.

Minister Dien also held talks with Senator Dan Sullivan of Alaska, exploring potential energy partnerships, including long-term liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply agreements. With Alaska’s stable LNG supply and competitive pricing, and Vietnam’s growing demand for LNG to fuel its gas-fired power plants, both sides acknowledged the significant potential for energy cooperation.

The meetings concluded with Secretary Wright and Senator Sullivan accepting invitations to visit Vietnam to further discuss bilateral energy cooperation.
