Southeast Asia has long been a dream destination for travelers worldwide, with Thailand, the Philippines, and Bali in Indonesia among the more obscure choices for those seeking unique, off-the-beaten-path adventures on a budget.

Vietnam, with its recent surge in infrastructure development and direct flight connections, has rapidly climbed the ranks of desirable locations. But this newfound popularity comes at a cost.

A recent exposé shed light on the antics of a TikToker named “Small Brained American”, highlighting the rise of offensive, reckless, and self-centered tourists seeking attention in this era of social media dominance.

Vietnamese tourism has bounced back strongly post-pandemic, with visitor numbers surging. Resorts and facilities have expanded across the country, from the northern region to the southern and central areas, to accommodate this influx.

To manage this growth sustainably, Vietnam has introduced more direct flights from countries like France, Australia, and Turkey, as well as others in Asia and Europe. The government has also implemented an efficient e-visa system, making it easier for tourists to obtain visas, with many countries also enjoying visa-free short-term visits.

Vietnam has never been more accessible, and the tourism numbers reflect the success of these initiatives in boosting the economy and benefiting communities nationwide.

However, with increased accessibility comes the challenge of managing inappropriate behavior from some visitors. These individuals seem to believe that they are exempt from local laws and can act with impunity while abroad.

The content shared by “Small Brained American” and similar platforms is not only offensive but also misrepresents the Vietnam that expats like myself, proud to call this country home, know and love.

Inappropriate behavior by tourists is not unique to Vietnam or Southeast Asia. Destinations like Spain, Ibiza, Mexico, and various South American countries have also borne witness to antisocial conduct. Social media has provided a platform for mostly younger tourists to seek notoriety through extreme and often offensive content, with little regard for the truth or the sentiments of the local population.

Vietnam is a complex and beautiful country with a rich history forged through generations of relentless struggle. Its captivating beauty, from sweeping coastlines to romantic hillside farmlands and majestic mountains, offers an unforgettable experience. The warmth and hospitality of the Vietnamese people, who effortlessly forge connections and touch hearts, further enhance the allure of this remarkable nation.

Expatriates living and working legally in Vietnam find the actions of these social media junkies offensive and embarrassing. Vietnam is an emerging economic powerhouse, characterized by a strong community spirit and a captivating cultural heritage that deserves to be respected and admired.

To anyone wishing to visit Vietnam, we extend a warm welcome. Immerse yourself in the local culture, create lifelong memories, and enjoy the breathtaking vistas this country has to offer. But above all, show respect for the laws and values of this amazing country, built on a foundation of resilience and community.

As an expat proud to call Vietnam home, with numerous Vietnamese friends, I am humbled by the support and friendliness shown by people across this beautiful country. Let us hope that incidents like the one involving “Small Brained American” serve as a lesson for others, ensuring that such offensive behavior remains an anomaly in Vietnam.
