Vietnam’s Ministry of Construction has proposed a significant expansion of the North-South expressway, aiming to widen the 1,144-kilometer eastern wing from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City to six lanes. This project is estimated to cost approximately 152.1 trillion VND (around 6.2 billion USD) and is expected to boost the country’s economy and infrastructure.
In a report to the Prime Minister, the ministry outlined special investment mechanisms to facilitate this expansion. They intend to appoint contractors with experience in expressway construction and provide exemptions from mining permits for construction companies sourcing common building materials.
With the ministry’s ambitious timeline, they aim to secure the legislature’s investment policy approval by June 2025 and commence construction by the fourth quarter of this year. The projected disbursement for 2025 is between 23 and 35 trillion VND (940 million – 1.43 billion USD), with the remaining balance to be allocated between 2026 and 2027.
Vietnamese officials emphasized the urgency of this upgrade to accommodate increasing traffic demand, support the nation’s target of 8% GDP growth, and achieve a GDP of 500 billion USD by 2025. This expansion is also expected to enhance traffic safety and address the limitations of the current four-lane expressway.
