In recent years, Vietnam has witnessed a growing trend of regions harnessing the potential of sustainable forest ecotourism. Forest ecotourism goes beyond traditional tourism by offering a profound and meaningful connection with nature. It invites visitors to embark on adventures such as hiking, kayaking, mountain climbing, cave exploration, and camping. These activities provide a unique perspective on nature, fostering a deeper understanding of environmental protection and inspiring a sense of responsibility towards forest conservation.

One of the country’s premier ecotourism hotspots is Ba Be National Park, nestled in the northern mountainous province of Bac Kan. Spanning nearly 10,000 hectares, the park captivates visitors with its breathtaking landscapes, including the majestic Ba Be Lake, the enchanting Dau Dang Waterfall, and the mysterious Puong Cave. Similarly, Ba Vi National Park, with its rich historical significance, pleasant climate, and abundant flora and fauna, has become a magnet for young travelers seeking a blend of nature and adventure.

In the heart of central Vietnam, Pu Mat National Park in Nghe An province has also carved its niche in ecotourism. Local businesses have embraced forest-based tourism services, creating employment opportunities for hundreds of locals. Con Cuong district, within the park’s vicinity, is gaining recognition not only for its natural splendor but also for the rich culture of its indigenous communities.

Another ecotourism standout is Pu Luong Nature Reserve in Thanh Hoa province, encompassing nearly 17,000 hectares of natural beauty. Each year, thousands of visitors are drawn to this reserve, and the province has responded with a strategic plan to further develop sustainable tourism. The goal is to attract 27,000 visitors by 2030, boosting the local economy while ensuring the long-term protection of the region’s biodiversity.

Cuc Phuong National Park, nestled in the northern province of Ninh Binh, offers a diverse range of experiences. From educational programs on environmental conservation to cultural exchanges with local ethnic groups, the park provides visitors with a unique and enriching journey. National parks like Cuc Phuong, Phu Quoc, Cat Tien, and Ba Be have solidified their reputation as leading ecotourism destinations, attracting travelers from both domestic and international shores. Sustainable Tourism for Long-Term Growth

Forest ecotourism holds immense potential to support economic development while conserving natural resources. Initiatives like the “National Park Passport” aim to further enhance ecotourism by inviting visitors to explore the diverse value of forest ecosystems. This program strives to create sustainable financial models for national parks and nature reserves, raising awareness about conservation along the way.

During its initial phase, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development will introduce the “National Park Passport” in 34 national parks with existing tourism activities. Available in both physical and digital formats, this initiative seeks to increase visitor numbers, enhance their ecotourism experience, and improve the infrastructure of these protected areas.

While the government has implemented supportive policies and initiatives for ecotourism, investment in the sector remains modest. Coordination between local authorities and businesses is often fragmented, leading to uncoordinated tourism development in many regions. To fully unlock the potential of ecotourism, stronger collaboration between authorities, local communities, and businesses is essential. This collaborative approach will ensure the sector’s sustainable growth while upholding environmental responsibility.

On February 29, 2024, the Prime Minister approved a comprehensive plan to maximize the multi-use value of Vietnam’s forest ecosystems by 2030, with a long-term vision extending to 2050. This strategy aims to significantly increase revenue from ecotourism, community tourism, and sustainable recreation, reflecting a commitment to making forest ecotourism a cornerstone of Vietnam’s tourism industry, benefiting both the economy and the environment.
