Emissions from transportation are a critical issue and one of the leading causes of air pollution in major cities. |
This column emphasizes the importance of green growth, energy transition, and a circular economy, reflecting the Party and State’s policies. Net Zero Journey aims to provide direction and encourage a collective effort to build a greener and more sustainable Vietnam by addressing breakthrough technologies and challenges to achieve net-zero emissions.
Vietnam has shown a strong commitment to net zero among Asian nations, with a pledge to reduce emissions by 43.5% by 2030 and reach full net zero by 2050. To support this goal, the National Science and Technology Programme for Net Zero (KC.16/24-30) has been initiated to contribute scientific and technological research in overcoming challenges in the emission reduction roadmap.
In alignment with government directives, the Ministry of Science and Technology has collaborated with agencies, organizations, and scientists to develop and issue the national-level science and technology program KC.16/24-30. This program will work in conjunction with other ongoing national science and technology programs to drive solutions, especially in green technology and greenhouse gas emission reduction, thus contributing to Vietnam’s commitments at the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26).
The program focuses on advanced technology research, development, and application to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. It covers eight key parts, from policy and mechanism studies to technological advancements in industry, transportation, construction, agriculture, environmental management, and energy sectors.
Since its announcement in December 2024, the program has received over 150 proposals from diverse organizations, individuals, research institutes, universities, and enterprises nationwide. Notably, most proposals focus on agriculture and industry, sectors with significant potential for emission reduction.
This reflects the scientific community’s interest and ability to translate foundational research into practical applications. Selected projects will receive funding and collaborate with businesses to refine, commercialize, and expand their applications. Ensuring that science and technology are applied beyond laboratory research to drive Vietnam’s Net Zero goal is crucial for effective and sustainable implementation.
The net-zero science and technology program is supported by Resolution 57/NQ-TW (issued by the Politburo on December 22, 2024), which promotes the development of strategic technologies and industries in energy, environment, and biotechnology. This provides an important premise for advancing technological research in industrial and transportation emission reductions and addressing emissions from agriculture, a significant and challenging source.
According to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Do Van Manh, Chair of the Net Zero Science and Technology Programme and Director of the Institute of Energy and Environmental Science and Technology, wet rice cultivation is a major source of greenhouse gas emissions in Vietnam due to the anaerobic environment and chemical fertilizer use. To address this, the program proposes breakthrough solutions, including developing new rice varieties that require less water and fertilizer while maintaining high yields and applying advanced biotechnology to process agricultural by-products sustainably.
The program sets an ambitious target of 80% of its researched technologies, management solutions, and technical processes to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. Dr. Do Van Manh emphasizes the importance of aligning research and emission reduction solutions with business realities. He expects some research projects to show positive results within the first year, providing concrete solutions and technologies for accurate emission reduction quantification on a large scale.
Many businesses, especially those engaged in exports, have proactively adopted emission reduction solutions due to pressure from international green standards. Industries such as garment, food, and footwear have undergone significant transformations to meet EU and developed country requirements. Large corporations in sectors like beer, alcohol, beverages, and logistics are also shifting towards green production, even without mandatory government regulations.
