The La Phu communal house in Vietnam’s Red River delta is a magnificent structure that serves as a place of worship and a venue for village events. Built during the Le Dynasty, the communal house retains its original architectural style and features, both inside and outside. With a large courtyard and a shrine behind it, The La Phu communal house is a source of supernatural power and an important symbol of traditional Vietnamese architecture.

According to Nguyen Cong Tam, deputy head of the village festival organizing board, the La Phu communal house is believed to be over 300 years old. It has undergone upgrades and changes throughout its history, but the villagers have always ensured to preserve its original style. The communal house is renowned for its intricate carvings depicting the daily activities of Vietnamese farmers, making it a treasure trove of folk sculpture.

Ngo Van Luong, the eldest resident of La Phu village, describes the communal house as a dragon holding a pearl in its mouth. The location of the communal house follows feng-shui principles, with a pond in front and the main pagoda situated behind it. The communal house itself is not surrounded by walls, but its three-door gate is made entirely of ironwood. The main worshiping hall of the communal house has a distinctive roof with curved spearheads and is adorned with carvings of two dragons flanking a moon.

The La Phu communal house is dedicated to the third son of King Hung Due Vuong, who played a significant role in defending the nation against Chinese invaders. His death anniversary is commemorated with an annual festival, and every five years, a grand festival is held to celebrate the village’s Tutelary God’s birthday. A palanquin procession, involving three palanquins and a horse, is an integral part of this grand festival.

La Phu village is also known for its pig procession festival, held every year on the 13th day of the first lunar month. This festival honors General Tam Lang, a talented military leader and the third son of King Hung Due Vuong. The procession involves parading a specially raised pig, along with offerings of steamed sticky rice and other items, from the host’s house to the village communal house. The pigs selected for the procession must meet certain criteria and are given special care and attention by the whole village.

In addition to the religious and cultural activities, the pig procession festival also includes various sports and cultural activities such as folk games, music and dancing performances, and sports competitions. The festival lasts for three days, from the 10th to the 13th day of the first lunar month.

La Phu village is not only a place of historical and cultural significance but also a vibrant community that continues to uphold its traditions and celebrate its rich heritage.
