This September, Vietnam and Germany commemorate 49 years of diplomatic relations, with a celebration that also marks 13 years of a strong strategic partnership. The two countries have shared a rich history since 1975, and their economic and cultural ties continue to flourish.

As the largest economy in the European Union, Germany boasts a robust trade relationship with Vietnam, with annual bilateral trade surpassing an impressive US$11 billion. This festival is a testament to the strength of this bond, especially between Da Nang and Germany.

Da Nang, the vibrant capital of central Vietnam, has been actively fostering connections with Germany across various sectors. This was evident in May when the city signed a memorandum of understanding with the German state of Thuringia, covering cooperation in human resource development, trade, scientific endeavors, and cultural exchanges. The potential for growth is immense, as demonstrated by Da Nang’s current trade figures with Germany, nearing $50 million, along with 11 active German investment projects in the city worth a total of $10.3 million.

After a pandemic-induced hiatus, the German Beer Festival makes its grand return this year. First launched in 2019, the festival promises to be bigger and better, showcasing the best of German culture and hospitality. The event will feature a range of exciting activities, including international music performances and a traditional German costume contest. Guests can also test their mettle in competitions like ‘Best German Beer Drinker’ and ‘Most Beer Glasses Carried,’ adding a fun twist to the celebrations.

The festival will be held on September 27 and 28 at 83-85-87 Tran Phu Street, Hai Chau District, from 6:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. In addition to the beer-themed contests and cultural performances, attendees can look forward to a lucky draw with attractive prizes and live electronic dance music (EDM) performances by popular local and international artists.

According to Nguyen Ngoc Binh, chairman of DAFO, the festival serves as a platform for Vietnamese individuals who have lived, studied, or worked in Germany to reconnect and share their experiences with the local German community. This cross-cultural exchange fosters a sense of community and lays the foundation for future collaborations.

Moreover, the event organizers aim to boost Da Nang’s appeal as a tourist destination, positioning the city as a hub for cultural events, festivals, and hospitality. This festival not only celebrates the strong bond between Vietnam and Germany but also sets the stage for the upcoming 50th-anniversary commemorations of their diplomatic ties in 2025. Da Nang is planning even grander celebrations for the golden jubilee, including an expanded beer festival and additional cultural exchange initiatives in collaboration with German diplomatic agencies in Vietnam.
