Ho Chi Minh City, often referred to as HCM City, is witnessing the transformation of the Central Highlands province of Kon Tum as it embarks on a journey to establish 10 community-based tourism villages in Kon Plong district by 2030.

Kon Tum’s provincial Party Committee has issued a directive with a clear vision: to develop community-based tourism in ethnic minority villages in Kon Plong district. This initiative aims to create a diverse range of tourist attractions while also increasing the income of the local ethnic communities.

To turn this vision into reality, the committee is taking several strategic steps. These include mobilizing social resources to invest in infrastructure and tourism services, providing training to enhance professional and technical capabilities within the village communities, and developing unique tourism products rooted in traditional cultural values.

Bach Thi Man, deputy director of the provincial Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, emphasized the significance of the directive. She explained that it plays a crucial role in shaping the tourism development strategy for ethnic minority villages, promoting the region, and ultimately improving the livelihoods of the locals.

Looking ahead to 2025, Kon Tum province is committed to capitalizing on its strengths in ecotourism and community-based tourism, as highlighted by Bach Thi Man.

The ten villages selected for this initiative include Kon Pring, Kon Vơng Kia, and Kon Leeng in Mang Den town, along with Kon Chenh and Kon Tu Rang in Mang Canh commune. Additionally, Kon Klung and Kon Plong in Hieu commune, Dak Lanh in Mang But commune, Ro Xia in Dak Tang commune, and Vi K’Tau in Po E commune are part of this transformative project.

These new community-based tourism villages will serve as satellite destinations, complementing the already popular Mang Den Eco-tourism Area. According to Bach Thi Man, this expansion will create a diverse range of options for visitors, enhancing the overall appeal of the province as a tourist destination.

Mang Den Eco-tourism Area has experienced remarkable growth in visitor numbers, surging from 600,000 in 2022 to one million in 2023. This upward trajectory continued into the following year, with 1.2 million visitors in 2023, generating a revenue of over 420 billion VND (approximately 16.4 million USD).

This rapid increase in tourism has prompted the locality to enhance service quality and develop infrastructure to accommodate the growing number of tourists.

Kon Plong district has been proactive in developing new tourism products, such as the Night Economic Zone, Mang Den Market, Mang Den Art Garden, and, of course, the community-based tourism villages. Currently, the district offers 139 accommodation options, including resorts, hotels, and homestays, with a total of 1,250 rooms. These establishments cater to more than 6,000 guests daily, maintaining an average occupancy rate of 65-70%. During the Tet (Lunar New Year) holiday, occupancy rates surge beyond 90%.
