Blacksmiths keep fires burning all year round in northern highlands
The Nung An ethnic minority people residing in Pac Rang village of Phuc Sen commune, Cao Bang province, continue to preserve their traditional craft of blacksmithing that has existed there for around 1,000 years.
Legend has it that the craft of blacksmithing in the village has existed since the 11th century. People produced weapons for fighting at first and then turned to forging tools for agricultural production and daily life.
Currently, Phuc Sen has become the largest blacksmithing workshop in the northern region, with the craft passed down from generation to generation. Its products are famous for their sharpness and durability.
In order to make a sharp knife, local people have their own secrets. Indeed, the materials used to create the forging knives are made from scrap cars.
According to veterans who reside in the village, the craft heavily relies on the delicate feel of the ears, eyes, and experience of the craftsman.
The products are durable, sharp, and sure, so they are very popular both locally and nationally.
The products are even purchased by visitors as souvenirs, giving local blacksmiths a great source of motivation to constantly hone their skills.
