Loy Krathong is a festival wherein people float Thai lanterns across a river or pond under the full-moon night to pay respects to the Buddha and the goddess of water. The word “loy” means “to float” while “krathong” is a lotus-shaped raft decorated with candles, incense and flowers. Krathong is commonly made from a slice of a banana tree trunk, which enables it to float on the surface of the water.
The festival takes place annually during the full moon of the 12th month in the traditional Thai lunar calendar.
In addition to the tradition of the floating krathong, TBA’s Loy Krathong in HCMC also featured a range of exciting activities including Muay Thai (Thai boxing), Thai dancing, the Loy Krathong Pageant and a lucky draw.
