Vietnam Earns ASEAN International Film Festival Accolade

The ASEAN International Films Festival & Awards (AIFFA) 2023 is currently being held in Malaysia and has seen two Vietnamese films nominated in four categories - “Best Actress” and “Best Cinematography” for the film "Memento Mori: Dat" (Memento: Earth) and “Best Screenplay” and “Best Supporting Actress” for the film "Dem toi ruc ro" (The Brilliant Darkness).

Two Vietnamese movies, “Memento Mori: Dat” (Memento: Earth) and “Dem Toi Ruc Ro” (The Brilliant Darkness), have received nominations in four categories at the AIFFA 2023. “Memento Mori: Dat” has been nominated for Best Actress (Nguyen Hai Yen) and Best Director of Cinematography (Tran Ngoc Khuyen), while “Dem Toi Ruc Ro” has been nominated for Best Screenplay (Nha Uyen) and Best Supporting Actress (Kim B).

Vietnamese actress Kim B from the movie “Dem Toi Ruc Ro” (The Brilliant Darkness) has won the award for Best Supporting Actress at the Asean International Films Festival & Awards (AIFFA 2023), held in Kuching, Sarawak from August 2-4, as reported by VNA.

Kim B, born in 1989 in Bien Hoa city, in the southern province of Dong Nai, is a makeup artist by profession. She has previously worked on famous film projects, including “Kong: Skull Island” directed by Jordan Roberts, a Hollywood movie set in Vietnam. Kim B’s role as Kim Bao in “Brilliant Night” marks her debut in the film industry.

The movie revolves around a family who discovers at their grandfather’s funeral that he left behind a fortune. However, they soon realize that their father had lost the fortune to gambling, and the mafia is now after them to collect the debt. They must repay the debt by sunrise, or else there will be another funeral.

“Dem Toi Ruc Ro” has also won the Best Story and Best Performance (Female) awards at the 2022 Santa Fe Film Festival in New Mexico.

Actress and director Hong Anh was the only Vietnamese representative on the festival’s jury, alongside other members from Malaysia, Turkey, Indonesia, and Malaysia.

The “Best Film” award at AIFFA 2023 was given to “Barbarian Invasion” by female director Chui Mun Tan from Malaysia, which had previously won the Jury Grand Prix at the 24th Shanghai International Film Festival Golden Goblet Awards in 2021.

AIFFA 2023 also awarded the “ASEAN Inspiration” award to Korean movie and music star Bi Rain.

The festival received a total of 120 films from filmmakers across the region, out of which 34 films were selected for the official competition round.
