THE HANOI TIMES — President Luong Cuong commended the dedication of Vietnamese artisans in preserving the nation’s cultural heritage on June 10, highlighting their crucial role in maintaining Vietnam’s traditional identity through their craftsmanship.

The president’s remarks came during a meeting with exemplary artisans at the Presidential Palace in Hanoi, an event commemorating the 20th anniversary of the Vietnam Craft Villages Association.

“Vietnamese craft villages have played a pivotal role in safeguarding and promoting our cultural values,” President Luong Cuong affirmed during the gathering. He recognized the artisans’ contributions over the years, which have not only preserved but also enhanced the country’s rich cultural legacy.

The celebration underscored the significance of Vietnamese craft villages and traditional crafts in the nation’s socio-economic progress, showcasing their enduring importance.

Expressing admiration for the exquisite Vietnamese handicrafts, President Cuong acknowledged the development of craft villages as a source of livelihood and cultural preservation. He noted their impact on creating job opportunities, especially for those in rural areas.

Cuong emphasized the dual role of these craft villages, stating, “They not only provide a means of sustenance and boost local economies but also serve as guardians of the cultural and historical heritage unique to each region.”

The president lauded the artisans’ commitment, regarding them as the heart and soul of their craft villages. He encouraged them to persist in their artistic pursuits, refine their skills, and pass on their knowledge to future generations, thereby ensuring the continuity of Vietnamese cultural traditions.

Luong Cuong also instructed relevant ministries and sectors to enhance mechanisms and policies aimed at improving the recognition and support for artisans. He encouraged innovation in handicraft production and the development of craft villages as tourist destinations.

Trinh Quoc Dat, Chairman of the Vietnam Craft Villages Association, attributed the renovation process to the increased potential for craft villages and their products to reach international markets. This has led to improved livelihoods and the creation of numerous jobs.

Dat acknowledged the supportive role of the Party and State, stating, “Their guidelines and policies have been instrumental in the strong development of craft villages and the improvement of villagers’ living standards. To continue this progress, traditional craft villages require policy support, technological advancements, and innovative initiatives to utilize local materials effectively and train the next generation of artisans.”

With over 5,400 craft villages, including 2,000 traditional ones, and 57 elements of national intangible cultural heritage in the traditional handicraft category, Vietnam boasts a vibrant artisanal landscape. These craft villages employ approximately 11 million local artisans, constituting around 30% of the workforce in rural and mountainous regions.

Many traditional craft villages are not just preserving their heritage but also contributing to poverty alleviation and the development of modern rural areas. Additionally, some have become sought-after destinations for both domestic and international tourists.
