Honoring the beauty and value of the Vietnamese language in overseas communities

The project aims to raise the awareness of the expat Vietnamese towards their mother tongue, honoring the beauty and value of the Vietnamese language. It also encourages and honors individuals and organizations that have made active contributions to preserving and spreading the language in the overseas Vietnamese community, maintaining the use of Vietnamese in Vietnamese families abroad in daily activities, and introducing the language to the local people of the host countries.

It looks to improve the efficiency and quality of teaching and learning Vietnamese in overseas communities and encourage the local governments to bring the language into teaching systems in areas where Vietnamese people concentrate. It also supports universities and research institutes that have Vietnamese faculties or departments and encourages local governments to recognize Vietnamese as an official foreign language in suitable areas.

Diverse activities for the Day of Vietnamese Language, which will be implemented throughout the year, can be held together with festivals and celebrations of the country’s important holidays.

Periodical contests to honor “Ambassador of Vietnamese language abroad”

The project has set out tasks and solutions to honor the Vietnamese language in foreign countries, namely holding commemoration day on September 8 to raise the awareness of the overseas Vietnamese community about the language, cherishing the beauty and values of Vietnamese, assessing the needs of using Vietnamese on a daily basis, encouraging overseas citizens to learn their homeland’s language and culture.

Notably, the project plans to hold an annual conference to celebrate the Day of Vietnamese Language. The event looks to connect overseas citizens through Vietnam’s diplomatic missions abroad with domestic educational institutions, associations for liaison with overseas Vietnamese, associations for education promotion, and Vietnam linguistics associations.

A periodical contest will be held to grant the title of “Ambassador of Vietnamese language abroad” to individuals and organizations who leave positive influences on the community through activities such as organizing systems of prestigious Vietnamese language textbooks, building bookcases/systems of materials for overseas children to learn Vietnamese, establishing free Vietnamese language classes for young Vietnamese abroad, winning awards in Vietnamese language contests at the national level. Ambassadors of the Vietnamese language abroad have the duty to promote the Vietnamese language through public activities, art, and mass media.

The project also looks to organize an art performance named “Dear Vietnamese” in Vietnam and foreign countries. The event will feature performances of overseas artists to promote the Vietnamese language in the host countries.

The Vietnamese diplomatic representative missions abroad will coordinate with local authorities and embassies to organize activities to promote the languages of other countries, integrating activities to celebrate the Day of Vietnamese Language with events for the Vietnamese people in the host countries. They will organize seminars to discuss Vietnamese language teaching and learning models for overseas communities, notably online teaching and exchange models among teachers and students, young people and relatives of overseas Vietnamese in host countries, Vietnamese language extracurricular activities, and summer camps for expat children).
