On Friday, a doctor from Hanoi’s 108 Military Central Hospital shared a heartwarming story of organ donation and successful transplants. Earlier in the week, the hospital facilitated the retrieval of seven organs, including a heart, liver, lung, two kidneys, and two corneas, from a brain-deceased man whose family made the courageous decision to donate his organs.
The man had been admitted to the Military Hospital 103 after a severe traffic incident and was diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury. Despite the best efforts of medical professionals, he fell into a coma and was pronounced brain dead.
It was at this difficult time that his family chose to offer hope to others, consenting to donate his organs and potentially save multiple lives. Their selfless decision set in motion a series of events that showcased the power of organ donation.
With the support of the 108 Military Central Hospital, experts successfully retrieved the organs and facilitated transplants. The donor’s liver and kidneys found a home in patients at the Military Hospital 103, giving them a new lease of life.
The donated heart was transported to the Hue Central Hospital in Thua Thien-Hue Province, bringing hope and healing to a patient in central Vietnam. Meanwhile, a lung from the young donor traveled to the National Lung Hospital in Hanoi, where it was transplanted to save another life.
The impact of the donor’s generosity is evident, as all recipients are showing positive signs of recovery. One patient, who received a liver transplant, is now conscious and able to speak normally, a testament to the success of the procedure.
This act of kindness marks the third liver transplant collaboration between the two military hospitals, as part of a liver transplant technique transfer contract. The 108 Military Central Hospital has an impressive track record, having performed over 250 liver transplants, 500 kidney transplants, two heart transplants, four lung transplants, and four limb transplants to date.
With a goal of 100 transplants per year, the hospital is committed to saving lives and making a meaningful difference in the community.
