A week prior to her ascent of Mt. Ama Dablam, Nguyen Thanh Binh successfully reached the summit of Mount Lobuche, standing at 6,119 meters. This formidable peak is located in the Himalayas and is only 10 kilometers away from Mt. Ama Dablam, making it one of the highest mountains in this majestic range.
On November 11, Binh returned to Hanoi, just two days after her triumphant climb, thus concluding her adventurous climbing journey for the year.
In an interview with Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper, Binh recounted her challenging yet rewarding experience. “Climbing Mt. Ama Dablam is particularly demanding for women due to the mountain’s rugged and unforgiving terrain,” she said. “We had to rely on ropes to navigate several steep and treacherous sections, which required not only physical strength but also technical skills.”
Binh attributed her success to her mental fortitude, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a calm and focused mindset before each climb. She also expressed gratitude toward her climbing partner and the skilled Sherpa guide team, who provided invaluable support throughout her journey to the summit of Ama Dablam.
Her determination was further fueled when another Vietnamese climber on the same expedition had to cut their journey short. This motivated Binh to persevere and ultimately reach the summit.
Binh’s climbing companion and coach, Phan Thanh Nhien, is a renowned mountaineer known for scaling Mount Everest. “Nhien is not just my friend but also my first climbing coach,” Binh said. “I always keep in mind his words of wisdom: to make your dreams a reality, consistent practice is essential.”

An Emotional Ascent of Mt. Everest
In April 2023, Nhien and Binh embarked on a climb of Mount Everest, the world’s tallest mountain, standing at 8,849 meters. Unfortunately, their journey took an unexpected turn when Binh received news of her father’s passing upon reaching 6,800 meters. She immediately descended and returned home to be with her family.
Later, Binh returned to Nepal, determined to continue her climb. On her second attempt, she managed to reach 7,500 meters. However, unfavorable weather conditions and a powerful storm prevented her from going further. “The unfinished climb of Everest remains a sentimental memory,” she shared.
“After the second unsuccessful attempt, I took a break from climbing. It wasn’t until the first day of 2024, when I climbed Sa Mu U Bo Mountain in Son La Province to watch the sunrise, that I realized my passion for mountaineering was still burning strong,” Binh recalled. “And so, I decided to continue chasing my dreams.”
She reignited her passion by conquering Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s tallest peak at 5,895 meters, followed by successful summits of Mt. Lobuche and Mt. Ama Dablam. “These climbs restored my confidence,” Binh said.
She is currently working on a novel titled ‘Snowy Peak,’ where she plans to share her unforgettable memories of climbing Mount Everest with the mountaineering community. Binh also expressed her determination to return to Nepal and conquer Mt. Everest in the future.

Vietnamese Climbers Conquer International Peaks
This year, several Vietnamese climbers achieved remarkable feats in the Indian Himalayas. Dr. Ngo Hai Son, a doctor at Viet Duc University Hospital in Hanoi, successfully scaled K2 in Pakistan, the world’s second-tallest mountain, standing at a daunting 8,611 meters above sea level. “I began my ascent of K2’s peak on July 28,” he recalled.
Khai Nguyen, an engineer based in the United States, was the first Vietnamese climber to conquer K2, followed by Dr. Son. In late September, during Nepal’s autumn-winter climbing season, a team of Vietnamese climbers and coaches, including Bui Van Ngoi, Do Huu Nam, Nguyen Manh Duy, and Khai Nguyen, reached the summit of Mount Manaslu, which stands at 8,163 meters and is the world’s eighth-highest mountain.
Nam and Nguyen have made history by becoming the first Vietnamese climbers to receive official recognition from Nepal’s Ministry of Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation for their successful ascent of Mount Manaslu.
