The decision was finalized on March 29, as announced by the Government Office, after careful consideration of the proposal put forward by the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism (MCST) and the verification results of the National Cultural Heritage Council.
The intangible cultural heritage element, “Mo Muong,” will be nominated to UNESCO for urgent safeguarding. “Mo Muong” is an integral part of the cultural heritage of the provinces of Hoa Binh, Thanh Hoa, Ninh Binh, Phu Tho, Son La, and Dak Lak, as well as Hanoi. It represents a folk performing genre deeply rooted in the rituals and spiritual beliefs of the Muong ethnic group, often performed during community gatherings and family rituals.
In contrast, the “art of Cheo” will be submitted for inclusion in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This folk theater art form, popular in the Red River Delta and neighboring northern regions, is a vibrant expression of Vietnamese cultural heritage. The provinces and cities associated with this nomination include Thai Binh, Ninh Binh, Ha Nam, Nam Dinh, Hai Duong, Hung Yen, Bac Ninh, Vinh Phuc, Phu Tho, Quang Ninh, Bac Giang, Thai Nguyen, Hanoi, and Hai Phong. “Cheo” serves as a creative outlet for farmers to convey their thoughts and express gratitude for abundant harvests and prosperity during traditional festivals.
The Vietnam National Commission for UNESCO is tasked with coordinating with the MCST to ensure the smooth execution of the submission process, recognizing the importance of preserving and promoting these cultural treasures.
