Hue Festival delayed to 2021 due to Covid-19

HCMC – The Thua Thien-Hue Province government has decided to delay the 11th Hue Festival, which was slated for August 26-31, 2020, until next year due to the spike in Covid-19 cases.

This is not the first time that the 11th edition of the central province’s biggest biennial cultural event has been delayed. The event was initially scheduled to take place from April 1 to 6 under the theme “Cultural heritage with integration and development, Hue – always something new to discover”.

It was expected that more than 20 art troupes from South Korea, Japan, Singapore, the Philippines, Hungary, Czech, the United States, Mexico and some other countries would join a series of events, including an opening ceremony, an ao dai (Vietnam’s traditional dress) festival, a street festival, a food fair and two cultural programs.

However, the organizer had to scrap some events from the agenda and delay the festival twice because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The previous edition of the Hue Festival, which was held in 2018, saw the participation of some 1,400 artists, including 388 from 24 international art troupes and some 1,000 from across the country and attracted more than 1.2 million visitors.

The neighboring Danang City has reported 79 locally-transmitted Covid-19 cases since July 25. Many patients have been transferred from Danang to Hue City for treatment. Three have succumbed to the coronavirus since it reemerged in Vietnam since July 25.
