Prompted by a love for Vietnam’s beautiful nature, Gian Thanh Son has captured the beauty of islands and seas during numerous flights over Truong Sa (Spratly Islands), and Phu Quy, Cham, Xanh and Con Dao, and other islands. Son’s aerial photos convey a message about Vietnam’s sovereignty and its tourism and economic potential.
Son’s photo book features 445 images selected from tens of thousands of photos in his collection “Vietnam seen from Above” which were taken when he was allowed for flight training by Aviation Regiment 917 under Aviation Division 370 during the past 20 years.
This was Son’s sixth launch of a book and photos capturing from above hundreds of big and small islands along Vietnam’s coastline. With his love for art, Son has always tried to capture the right moments of nature.

Born in 1957, Son is a photo journalist and a member of the Vietnam Journalists Association and the Vietnam Lawyers Association. He is a BA in Literature and an honorable doctor of World Records University.
For the last 40 years, Son has traveled to 89 countries and territories, launching various photo exhibitions and books at home and abroad. His pictorial chronicle “Aerial View of Vietnam’s Coastline and Islands” is the first high-class photo book about Vietnam’s islands and coastline.
Son is a photographer with the highest number of records in Vietnam. He was the “photographer who portrayed the highest number of politicians” (2005); the “owner of the biggest collection of photos of the country seen from above” (2007); and the “owner of the first high-class photo book of Vietnam’s foreign relations” (2011).
Son’s pictorial chronicle was displayed in Italy and the Republic of Cyprus in 2015.
